Why will you benefit from living on campus?

  • A higher GPA, possibly. Students tend to have more academic success when they can easily access university resources.
  • Amenities! These include Wi-Fi, 24-hour computer labs, a microwave, fridge and free laundry facilities.
  • Fun, food and friends, thanks to events held in the residence halls.
  • Convenience — you’re much closer to your classrooms and other places you need to go on campus.
  • Support. A resident assistant lives on each floor. They are equipped to help with almost any problem you may have. We also have a 24-hour front desk with someone who is always available to answer questions or help you.
  • Leadership and employment opportunities. Residence Life hires more than 150 student employees each year. You might become a floor president, a member of the Residence Hall Association or a resident assistant.

Living off campus? Here are tips for commuters

  • Come to campus for more than classes. Getting involved, meeting people and having fun are huge parts of college life.
  • Consider purchasing a meal plan if you’ll be on campus during lunch or dinner. Eating here can help you meet new people. Dining services has meal plans just for commuters. Learn more:

  • Find a “home base” on campus and use this place to study, eat, read or hang out.
  • Know where and when to park. We recommend arriving on campus at least 30 minutes before your first class each day, since some commuter lots can become congested around the middle of the day (around 10 a.m.-3 p.m. most days).

    Find out where to park

  • Get a storage locker in the Plaster Student Union. The PSU has a limited number of lockers for commuters to use at no cost. Stop by the PSU information desk to request a key.
  • Create a plan for inclement weather. If there is snow or ice, you may want to stay on or near campus. Make friends in the residence halls — you never know when you might need a place to stay. Also, have an emergency kit in your vehicle.

3 tips for living with roomates

1. Communicate effectively

You and your roommate may have different communication styles. That may cause conflicts. It can be helpful to discuss how you plan to handle conflict. You should develop a plan to split the responsibilities of living together, such as cleaning, buying supplies such as toilet paper, etc.

2. Discuss common issues

Problems can be avoided if potential conflicts are discussed and agreements are reached early in the semester.

Common issues between roommates involve:

  • Overnight guests
  • Noise-level preferences
  • Cleaning habits
  • Policy violations
  • Study and sleep habits

Use a “roommate agreement” as a proactive tool to discuss how you and your roommate and/or suitemates will share your space. If you would like a roommate agreement, your RA can provide one and help mediate the conversation.

3. Compromise

Remember that people have their own ways of living in a shared space.

When differences arise, coming to an agreement may involve compromise. It is important to be open and flexible, yet assertive about your own preferences.
