GI Bill® Benefit Checklist

First time applicants

Students applying for benefits for the first time are required to complete the following:

  1. Apply for admission to the University
  2. Apply for benefits through the GI Bill® website
  3. Meet with a Certifying Official in Veteran Student Center (Required for all new MSU students) to go over the following:

    Provide a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) and DD214 to the Veteran Student Center 

  4. Participate in SOAR (Student Orientation and Registration) or complete Transfer Orientation (for transfer students)

  5. Register for classes (the classes you take must apply to the degree you are seeking in order for them to be certified)

  6. Complete the online Veterans Certification Request Form

Continuing students

If you have previously received education benefits within the last year at Missouri State University, please complete the online Veterans Certification Request Form each semester of enrollment.

Transfer Students

  1. Apply for admission to the University
  2. Participate in online Transfer Orientation
  3. Meet with a Certifying Official in the Veteran Student Center (Required for all new MO State students) to go over the following:
    1. Provide a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA and DD-214 to the Veteran Student Center office

  4. Register for classes (the classes you take must apply to the degree you are seeking in order for them to be certified)

  5. Complete the online Veterans Certification Request Form
  6. Complete VA Form 22-1995 or if you are a Chapter 35 (DEA) recipient complete VA Form 22-5495 and provide a copy of the form or copy of online submission confirmation to our office

Required Forms (listed by VA program)

Chapter 30 - Montgomery GI Bill® Active Duty

Persons who entered active duty after July 1, 1985, and had their military pay reduced by $100 per month for 12 months, may qualify for this program. This is a non-refundable contribution. These persons also must have served a minimum of two years, earned a high school diploma or its equivalent either prior to, or during the qualifying enlistment, and must have an honorable discharge. Other requirements may apply.

  • Certificate of eligibility received from the VA
  • Copy of DD-214 Discharge Document – Member 4 copy (This form is provided to you by your military branch at completion of enlistment.)
  • Copy of "kicker" paperwork, if applicable (This paperwork is provided to you by your military branch at time of enlistment)
  • Veterans Certification Request Form

Chapter 1606 - Members of the Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserve/National Guard

This program provides benefits for members of the Reserve/National Guard who enlisted, re-enlisted or extended their enlistment for a period of six years after July 1, 1985

  • Certificate of eligibility received from the VA
  • Copy of DD-214, and Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) Form #2384 (This form is provided to you by your unit.)
  • Copy of "kicker" paperwork, if applicable (This paperwork is provided to you by your military branch at time of enlistment)
  • Veterans Certification Request Form

Chapter 1607- REAP (Reserve Educational Assistance Program)

This program provides up to 36 months of education benefits to members of the Selected Reserves, Individual Ready Reserve (IRR), and National Guard, who are called or ordered to active service in response to a war or national emergency

  • Certificate of eligibility received from the VA
  • Copy of DD-214, and Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) Form #2384 (This form is provided to you by your unit.)
  • Copy of "kicker" paperwork, if applicable (This paperwork is provided to you by your military branch at time of enlistment)
  • Veterans Certification Request Form

Chapter 35 - Dependents or Spouse of 100% Disabled or Deceased Veterans

This program provides benefits for dependents and spouses of veterans who died or are 100% disabled due to service-connected causes.

  • Certificate of eligibility received from the VA. You must provide the veteran's file number to the MSU Veteran Student Center.
  • Veterans Certification Request Form

Chapter 31 – Vocational Rehabilitation/Disabled Veterans

Eligibility for this program is determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The program provides payment of required fees and a monthly allotment.

  • Vocational Rehabilitation counselor should fax us a copy of your VA Form 28-1905 (authorization form)
  • Veterans Certification Request Form

Chapter 33 – Post 9-11 GI Bill®*

This program provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001 or individuals discharges with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for Post 9-11 GI BiLL®. Individuals may transfer benefits to eligible dependents.

  • Application for Educational Assistance (Form 22-1990) or certificate of eligibility received from the VA
  • Copy of DD-214 Discharge Document – Member 4 copy (This form is provided to you by your military branch at completion of enlistment.)
  • Copy of "kicker" paperwork, if applicable (This paperwork is provided to you by your military branch at time of enlistment)
  • Veterans Certification Request Form

*If you are a service member transferring benefits to a spouse or child or are the dependent of a service member using transferred benefits please ensure all steps are completed.
