Strategic planning meeting in February

The third interactive workshop took place on Feb. 24, with 83 in-person and 10 virtual participants. Zora Mulligan, Strategic Planning Committee co-chair, presented the revised values, vision and mission statement.

Dr. Welty outlined the strategic planning process and timeline, then tasked participants with reviewing and providing feedback on the revised values, vision and mission statement, as well as the goal statements and desired outcomes developed by each of the five goal work groups.

Representatives from each group gave brief presentations:

  • Academic Opportunities and Innovation – member Dr. Scott Zimmerman
  • Branding and Identity – Co-chairs Natalie Allen and Katherine Whitaker
  • Community Partnerships and Economic Development – Co-chairs Danny Perches and Dr. Ben Beranek
  • Institution of Choice for Employers and Students – Co-chair David Hall
  • Students and Alumni Experience – Co-chair Daezia Smith

Following the presentations, participants got to work at their respective tables, discussing and documenting their feedback about the revised values, vision and mission statement, as well as the goal statements and desired outcomes. After the exercise, several people from some of the tables shared their insights.

The Strategic Planning committee welcomes additional input at StrategicPlan@MissouriState.edu. Each work group will review the feedback received, make revisions and begin discussion on strategies to achieve the desired outcomes.

Interactive Workshop No. 4 will take place in early April, offering stakeholders a chance to provide feedback on draft strategies. Stay tuned for details on how to participate.

October 30, 2024

workshop two recap

The second interactive workshop took place on Oct. 28 with more than 130 faculty, staff, students and alumni who participated. Dr. Welty gave an overview of the strategic planning process and timeline. He also explained the task for workshop participants, which was to review and provide feedback on the draft values, vision, mission statement and goal categories developed by the Strategic Planning Committee.

After the committee’s co-chairs Zora Mulligan and Dr. Ken Brown shared the draft in more detail, participants worked in small groups to discuss the values, vision, mission statement and goals, and suggest things that should be removed or added. Each group then had a chance to briefly present their suggestions.

Based on the feedback received, the committee will revise the draft and determine the goal categories. Work groups will then be set up to identify outcomes for each goal category. Initial virtual work group meetings will occur the week of Nov. 11. Get more info and indicate interest in participating in a work group.

On Sept. 30, the strategic planning committee gathered for its kick-off meeting, where they met with and heard from President Dr. Richard B. Williams and Dr. John Welty, a consultant from AASCU Consulting. Welty gave an overview and timeline of the strategic planning process and discussed the committee’s roles and responsibilities. Committee members also engaged in an activity where they discussed the events, trends and issues over they next five years that would likely impact Missouri State and higher education.

Following the meeting was the first interactive workshop. Several hundred Missouri State faculty, staff, students and alumni, as well as community members attended the event. President Williams thanked the crowd for their interest and participation and Dr. Welty presented on the strategic planning process. After his presentation, participants worked in small groups to provide their thoughts and feedback on several scenarios pertaining to Missouri State’s past, present and future.

Additionally, several small group sessions will take place throughout the week to gather input from various stakeholders on the university’s strengths, areas of improvement, opportunities and threats. The Strategic Planning committee will review the information collected and use it to help identify the major goals for the Strategic Plan.
