Research and professional interests

Kyle Aho earned a master's degree in music theory from Missouri State University in 2010. While at MSU, he studied with Dr. Peter Collins, Dr. Michael F. Murray, and Randy Hamm. He also taught Music Theory, The Language of Music, and Jazz Symposium. He is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, a national music honor society.

Aho graduated with academic honors from New England Conservatory, where he earned a master's degree in jazz piano performance. He earned his bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, in piano performance from Idaho State University. He has studied jazz with Fred Hersch, Jerry Bergonzi, Michael Cain, and Frank Carlberg, and he has played in ensembles under the direction of Bob Brookmeyer, George Russell, George Garzone, Allan Chase, Dominique Eade, and Carl Atkins.

Aho taught jazz piano for seven years at the Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts, a high-powered prep school with a nationally recognized jazz program. Milton's nine jazz ensembles regularly receive individual and group awards from Down Beat, Berklee College of Music, and IAJE. Aho's students have gone on to become music majors at Oberlin Conservatory, Yale School of Music, and New England Conservatory.

Performance highlights include: Jordan Hall, the Tremont Theatre, and Berklee Performance Hall in Boston as well as The Green Mill in Chicago, Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and The Blue Note and The Jazz Standard in New York City. Springfield, MO performances include Ellis Hall, Juanita K. Hammons Hall, and the Springfield Art Museum. Aho is featured on several recording labels, including CadenceJazz, Watercourse, NohJoh, and Papaya.
