Biography
Jennifer Powell
Mezzo-soprano,Jennifer Powell, has made a presence in major opera houses around the country. Opera News stated, “The best singing came from young artist Jennifer Powell, as a strong, affecting Mamma Lucia,” in Opera Theater of St. Louis’ production of Cavalleria Rusticana. During two consecutive summers at the renowned Santa Fe Opera, audiences enjoyed Powell’s portrayal of Giovanna in Verdi’s "Rigoletto" and as a devoted confidant Alisa in "Lucia di Lammermoor".
Her clear diction and a connection to strong characters play well to Powell's admiration of contemporary english opera. The role of Jesse in the New York premiere of William Mayer’s "A Death in the Family", at Manhattan School of Music, immediately found favor with the New York Times, while her work as Bianca in Britten’s "Rape of Lucretia" with New York Chamber Opera made for a lasting impression. While a member of the Lyric Opera of Kansas City Young Artist Program, she performed the roles of Alisa in "Lucia di Lammermoor," Praskowia in "The Merry Widow," and Berta in "Barber of Seville."
Powell has also earned success in more intimate settings with her dramatic artistry and rich tone performing lead roles in Menotti’s "The Medium" and "Amahl and the Night Visitors," and Giulio Cesare in "Giulio Cesare in Egitto." Powell has enjoyed the honors of becoming a Metropolitan Opera Regional Finalist, a Sara Tucker Grant Nominee, and performed her way to second place finish at the MTNA National Artist Voice Competition.
More recent engagements featured Powell in the role of Third Secretary in "Nixon in China" with Lyric Opera of Kansas City, and she was an Alto extra chorus member with the illustrious Metropolitan Opera in various productions. She has been the soloist in several oratorio concerts and has served on the voice faculty most recently at Tennessee State University and Rockhurst University.
Powell is a graduate of Missouri State University and University of Missouri-Kansas
City.
