Family Alerts and Emergency Communication

The Office of Family Programs recognizes that the safety of your student and the university community is a priority. We strive to keep you informed on the resources available. We encourage you to have discussions about campus safety with your student.

Emergency notification

Missouri State University maintains a comprehensive Missouri State Alert System for the purpose of issuing immediate notification to keep MSU students, faculty and staff informed during an emergency situation. There are many components of the system that provide redundant layers of notification to ensure the widest possible distribution of the message, and these system components are regularly tested to ensure proper functionality.

How family members can stay informed

  1. Homepage and Social Media - The University Status website is the best place to receive the most thorough, accurate and up-to-date information during an emergency. Follow @MissouriState, @BearsFamilies, @MsuSafety and @MoStateParking on Twitter to stay-up-to-date on happenings on campus.
  2. University Safety website – The University Safety website has important safety information.
  3. Family Programs – The Office of Family Programs does not send emergency notification emails to family members. When available and appropriate, Family Programs will share community bulletins and alerts through special email messages, on social media or in Bear Notes to those who have subscribed to receive our email communication.
  4. Missouri State Alert System - Safety alerts are issued when a crime or other emergency is ongoing and poses a threat to campus (such as: an active shooter, a chemical leak), to alert our campus community of an immediate threat, and provide potential life-saving safety steps. Missouri State Alert is the mass notification system used to contact students, faculty, staff and the public in the event of an emergency. Family members may sign up to receive these alerts. Please note you will receive every alert that is sent out, including alerts about weather.

Missouri State uses this variety of notification methods to reach large numbers of constituents as quickly and efficiently as possible. Continuing assessments of the situation and additional warnings will occur as appropriate. Learn more about Emergency Management procedures at Missouri State.
