Ensure yourself a smooth ride. Register your bicycle and know the paths for safety.

Registering your bicycle

If you are a student, faculty or staff, please fill out the Bicycle-Scooter Registration Form to register your bicycle or scooter. This service is free.

You will need to know the model, make, year, color, size serial number and any other distinguishing marks of your bicycle. We will receive a sticker for your bicycle or scooter, and we will advise on the best placement.

If someone steals your bicycle, the registration information may help us find it.

Operating your bicycle

You must ride your bicycle on the designated bicycle paths. Bicycle paths have red-colored concrete, brick outlines and a bicycle symbol. View our bicycle paths throughout campus.

Rules of the road

Vehicle laws apply to drivers and bicycle riders. It is important to know Missouri laws, city of Springfield ordinances and campus rules and regulations.

When riding your bicycle on the road, you should:

  • Yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and have caution at intersections and crosswalks.
  • Ride with the flow of traffic.
  • Ride as close to the right side of the bicycle path as is practical. If sharing the lane with automobiles, allow enough room for a car to comfortably pass on your left.

Safe riding tips

When operating your bicycle, you should:

  • Use proper hand signals when making a turn or stopping.
  • Respect areas designated for pedestrians only or as access ramps for people with disabilities.
  • Wear a helmet.
  • Wear bright-colored, close-fitting clothes.
  • Keep at least one hand on the handlebars.
  • Carry identification and a cell phone in case of an emergency.

Securing your bicycle

Only lock your bike to authorized bike racks. Make sure you secure the frame to the rack. The best locks to use are the U-shaped style locks.

Do not secure your bicycle to trees, handrails, signposts, access ramps and other such objects.

Stolen bicycles

Please report your stolen bicycle to MSU dispatch at 417-836-5509.

Abandoned bicycles

If you do not move your bicycle for 30 days, it is considered abandoned. We may remove locking devices, if necessary. If you do not claim your bicycle in 60 days, we will dispose it.
