What is prior learning assessment?

Many students obtain college-level knowledge and skills prior to enrolling in college or before taking a particular class, whether through rigorous high school curricula, self-directed learning, professional training, or military experience. Prior learning assessment, also referred to as testing out of classes or receiving credit by examination, involves measuring or documenting such learning in order to grant academic credit.

At Missouri State, credit for prior learning is granted based on external examinations as well as through assessments developed and administered by departments.
