Chemical Hygiene Plan
A Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) is required by the US Occupational Safety & Health Administration’s (OSHA) Laboratory Standard (29 CFR 1910.1450), to establish procedures to protect employees from health/physical hazards associated with the use of hazardous chemicals in the “laboratory”. The OSHA Standard defines a laboratory as a facility where the "laboratory use of hazardous chemicals" occurs; anywhere relatively small quantities of hazardous chemicals are used on a non-production basis. This definition may include photo labs and art studios.
Several departments on the Missouri State campus have developed their own department-specific CHP. The CHP provided here applies to all university faculty, staff, student employees, and associates working with or around laboratory operations involving hazardous chemicals who are not covered by one of these department-specific plans.
Each laboratory employee is expected to be familiar with and operate in accordance with the procedures outlined in this CHP. In addition to this posting on the Environmental Management website, it is recommended that each Department maintain a hard copy in the departmental office.
