Although waste antifreeze is not a listed hazardous waste under the federal hazardous waste regulations in 40 CFR 261 Subpart D, it may contain substances that would cause it to be classified as a characteristic hazardous waste (40 CFR 261 Subpart C). It also is known to contain substances that are harmful to animals and the environment. Recent studies have shown that antifreeze from late model cars and trucks may not exhibit hazardous characteristics; however, Missouri State University has chosen to recycle all spent antifreeze rather than dispose of it.
Waste antifreeze must not be discharged to storm sewers, storm sewers or septic systems, or dumped on the ground. Waste antifreeze generated on the campuses of Missouri State should be accumulated for recovery. Persons generating waste antifreeze should contact the Environmental Management Department for removal. The spent antifreeze generated on the Springfield campus will be sent off site for recycling.
