Communication Sciences and Disorders Learning Outcomes
Outcomes for graduates of the speech-language pathology program
- Students will demonstrate basic levels of ethical leadership by completing training in Privacy and Confidentiality of Private Health Information.
- Students will demonstrate awareness of different aspects of diversity (e.g. SES, severity of disabilities, age) by reflecting on experiences with diverse groups via service-learning activities.
- Students will demonstrate cultural competence by examining personal values and beliefs regarding culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
- Students will demonstrate cultural competence by completing an extended observation report that acknowledges the focus of communication treatment and the manner in which it was tailored to meet the needs of the individual client based on his/her culture and point in the lifespan.
- Students will demonstrate basic knowledge of the processes involved in normal speech, language, hearing, and swallowing functions. This includes, and is not limited to, acoustic, linguistic, biological, physiological, and neurological processes and the research and clinical technologies associated with these processes.
- Students will demonstrate foundational knowledge regarding the clinical signs, and etiologies related to communication disorders as well as understanding of the basics of clinical intervention. Part of this involves knowing how these disorders impact participation in and access to daily life skills for both affected individuals and their caregivers, in culturally diverse contexts, and across the lifespan.
Outcomes for graduates of the audiology program

Exercise Science Learning Outcomes
- Graduates will demonstrate knowledge of the structure and function of the body, application of biomechanical principles to efficient movement in activities of daily life as well as to training, physiological principles, responses, and adaptations to training, and developmental changes with growth, maturation and aging.
- Graduates will demonstrate the ability to discuss the physiological basis of the components of physical fitness; accurately measure and interpret the measurement of each component; screen clients of all ages for fitness testing; adapt testing protocols according to health appraisals and medical history; and understand the effects of common prescription drugs on exercise testing and prescription.
- Graduates will demonstrate the ability to prescribe and implement all phases of exercise training programs specific to the age and functional ability of the client and in accordance with benefits, precautions, and contraindications of progressive exercise; identify proper and improper technique in the use of equipment; and apply methods to monitor exercise intensity.

Physician Assistant Studies Learing Outcomes
The MSU Physician Assistant Studies Department has established the identified PA program competencies. These competencies are summative in nature and are expected of an MSU PA Program graduate. In addition, these competencies are consistent with program course learning outcomes and take into account national professional guidelines for the PA profession.
1. MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE
Graduating MSU PA students will:
- Understand, evaluate, and apply an evidence-based approach to medicine to patient care.
- Apply sound science concepts to patient care.
- Evaluate medical conditions with the understanding of the etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, and epidemiology of the disease process.
- Recognize and interpret the signs and symptoms of medical and surgical conditions.
- Select, perform and/or interpret the appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies/procedures.
- Formulate and monitor a management plan for general medical and surgical conditions to include pharmacotherapy, therapeutic procedures, and other treatment modalities.
- Apply concepts of health maintenance and disease prevention utilizing appropriate resources, referrals, and follow-up services.
- Utilize appropriate screening methods to detect medical and surgical conditions in asymptomatic patients.
- Elicit a comprehensive, accurate patient history and perform a thorough physical examination to identify abnormalities associated with disease.
- Organize and interpret information to formulate differential diagnoses for each patient presentation.
2. INTERPERSONAL AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Through verbal, nonverbal, written, and electronic communications, graduating MSU PA students will:
- Develop an ethically sound and appropriate relationship with patients.

3. PATIENT CARE
Patient care includes patient- and setting-specific assessment, evaluation, and management. Physician assistants must demonstrate care that is effective, safe, high quality, and equitable. Graduating MSU PA students will:
- Work effectively and professionally as a member of an interdisciplinary health care team to provide patient-centered care.
- Interact with patients and their families with respect, empathy, and compassion.
- Obtain, organize, and document essential and accurate patient information, including appropriate use of the electronic medical record.
- Utilize patient preferences, current scientific evidence, and informed clinical judgment to develop medical plans regarding diagnostics and therapeutic interventions.
- Effectively counsel and educate patients and families regarding physical and mental health issues, including disease prevention, health maintenance and holistic care.
- Competently perform and/or assist with essential medical and surgical procedures within the scope of PA practice.

Professionalism is critical to the physician assistant practice. Graduating MSU PA students will:
- Understand the legal and regulatory requirements, as well as the appropriate role of the physician assistant.
