Reinstatement

Information for students on suspension who wish to return

The reinstatement procedure is described below. You are encouraged to begin the process well in advance of the semester that you plan to return. Reinstatement is not an automatic process. You must be approved by the dean of the college of the major in which you plan to return.

Required suspension periods:

If you have been suspended once, you must remain out for one full semester before you are eligible to be considered for reinstatement. The summer semester does not count; thus, students suspended following a spring semester must remain out for the summer and fall semesters.

If you have been suspended two or more times, you must remain out for one full year before you are eligible to be considered for reinstatement.

Reinstatement process:

If you have only been out for one semester (or both the summer and fall if you were suspended following a spring semester), you do not need to apply for readmission. (This is applicable to students who have been suspended only once.) You do need to:

  1. Change your major if you plan to return under a different major than you were under when suspended following instructions on declaring or changing a major.
  2. Contact the dean of the college of the major under which you plan to return. Consult the catalog for information on the academic organization.
  3. Inform the dean if you have attended another college or university and, upon completion of your courses at that institution, have your official transcript sent to the Office of Admissions. You must have at least a 2.00 GPA on transferable courses to be eligible to return.
  4. Check your registration status page on My Missouri State for other steps you must take (e.g., removing holds).

If you wish to return after an absence of one full year or more, you must:

  1. Apply for readmission. On your application, you will indicate your intended major upon return and whether you have attended another college or university subsequent to leaving MSU.
  2. If you qualify for readmission, you will be notified by the Office of Admissions.
  3. Following your readmission, you must contact the dean of the college of the major under which you plan to return.
  4. Check your registration status page on My Missouri State for other steps you must take (e.g., removing holds).

If you do plan to take courses at another college or university with the intention of transferring them back to MSU, we encourage you to review transfer equivalencies available for most Missouri universities and selected institutions for other states. You should also visit with your academic advisor.

If you have questions, contact the dean of the college of your major or the Office of Admissions.
