Student Health and Safety
Protecting your student’s health and safety
The health and safety of your student at Missouri State is just as important to us as it is to you. MSU and the Springfield community offer several outstanding wellness and safety services.
Magers Health and Wellness Center
Located on campus, Magers Health and Wellness Center provides quality health and preventive care at minimum cost to the University community. The qualified staff of physicians, nurses, technicians, pharmacists and medical support personnel offers the following services:
- Primary care
- Pharmacy
- Lab
- X-ray
- Treatment clinic
- Specialty services
- Wellness services
All medical services are offered on site. The prepaid student health fee covers basic office visits by students. Other professional services and care are available at a reduced charge.
Health insurance
Students who are not covered under their parents’ or guardians’ health insurance plan, or who have no coverage of their own, are encouraged to purchase health insurance. A health insurance plan is available for all domestic undergraduate students enrolled in six or more credit hours.
Counseling Center
Missouri State’s Counseling Center promotes students’ personal development and psychological well-being through a variety of services for students at no additional cost. Specifically, the staff members are trained to assist students with personal and social concerns, and life-planning issues.
The center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. An on-call clinician is always available for first-time visitors to the center.
Residence hall safety
All residence halls have open-entry access from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. After 7 p.m., all doors to the residence halls are locked and only students who live in a particular residence hall can enter by using their electronic access card.
The front desk of each residence hall is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition, two trained residence hall assistants are on duty every day of the week. In the event of a fire or tornado, all students and their guests are evacuated and escorted to a safe destination.
Campus safety services
The department of safety and transportation offers the following safety services to students:
- The Bear Line Shuttle
- Safe Walk Services
- Well-lit, secured parking garages and lots
- Bicycle paths
- Emergency blue light safety phones
Missouri State Alert
Missouri State Alert is an emergency notification system that uses text messages, email and phone calls to notify the MSU community of an emergency or school closing. Enrollment in the system is highly encouraged but not mandatory.
