“Get involved in classes, take good care of your health, be yourself and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

Ashley’s experience working in various departments across campus allowed her to make connections and helped her feel comfortable to ask questions and use the resources that Missouri State-West Plains has to offer.

Through the help of faculty and staff and determination, Ashley used these principles to pave her way to a successful college experience at Missouri State-West Plains.

“I was able to learn more about the students and staff which helped me in developing social skills for my occupation.”

Choosing the right college is a pivotal choice in one’s life. For Ashley Wilson, the decision to attend Missouri State University-West Plains was driven by a combination of factors. The accessibility of classes, small class size, and the flexibility to attend both seated and online classes made it an ideal choice for Ashley.

Missouri State-West Plains provided Ashley with several opportunities to develop the skills she needed to be successful in her chosen career, including her time as a student worker in several different departments and her volunteer work as an ally in the TJ Swift House ASCEND Program for autistic and neurodiverse students.

“When I would struggle in certain areas, my instructors were easily accessible to provide advice or the resources I needed to succeed.”

Like many college students, Ashley began to experience doubt in her choice of degree program. About halfway through the program, she discussed her thoughts and concerns with an advisor, who helped her discover the right degree path.

“I realized the program was not a fit for me. I began to feel that I would not be able to accomplish my goals or dreams,” Ashley said, “Upon graduation, I now feel successful and am confident in accomplishing my dreams of becoming a professional in the mental health career field.”

The accessibility to faculty and staff helped Ashley navigate college life by sharing resources that could help her as she worked towards graduation.

“Missouri State-West Plains was a great experience that not only changed my life, but my family’s life by providing the resources I needed to succeed.”

With a degree from Missouri State-West Plains, Ashley has embarked on a mission to make a positive impact in her community. Through her work in mental health awareness and life skills development, she strives to uplift and educate individuals in any way she can.

As a nontraditional student with a family, Ashley knows firsthand how tough life can be. She plans on using her experience to help create positive change the same way that Missouri State-West Plains did for her.
