GENERAL FUNCTION

The Access Control Specialist performs journeyman level locksmith work requiring expertise in installing, maintaining and repairing different types of building locks including combination key cores, cylindrical, unit, mortis and rim, and reload cylinders, repairing various types of locking mechanisms and other door hardware, as well as locks on desks, file cabinets, display cases, and similar containers. The Access Control Specialist rekeys buildings, installs, services, and maintains electric strikes, magna-locks, motion detectors, card readers, power supplies, circuit breakers, solenoids, transmitter wall switches, automatic door openers and controls, panic bars, door closers, and digital entry systems. The Access Control Specialist cuts new or replacement keys, picks locks for which keys have been lost or broken and makes repairs of locks as required under emergency conditions. The Access Control Specialist surveys building locks and locking systems to determine if adequate building security is provided, maintains building key code records, maintains security with respect to key codes and all mechanical security systems, maintains lock key shop security, maintains an adequate and appropriate stock of locksmith supplies and equipment, and monitors and reports maintenance issues needing attention to the appropriate authority.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A high school diploma or the equivalent is required; specific technical training related to locksmithing is preferred.

Experience: At least six years of experience as a locksmith is required; familiarity with Medeco and Best Locking Systems is preferred.

License: Licensed Locksmith preferred.

Skills: Must be knowledgeable and able to install and repair electronic locking systems. Requires a general mechanical ability and skills in the use of hand tools and equipment associated with the locksmithing and electronic locking systems. Requires the ability to interpret plans and blueprints and to understand hardware schedules. Effective oral and written communication skills are required. Computer literacy is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Effort: Requires the use of small hand and power tools. Requires the ability to lift and/or transport supplies, equipment, and machinery weighing up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis; requires frequent bending, stooping, and reaching on a daily basis, including climbing stairs in all University buildings. Some positions in this job classification (job title) are designated as essential employees who must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather; the supervisor will communicate whether the particular position is considered essential and under what situations.

Other: A valid Missouri driver’s license is required. Must be bondable. The scope of the position may require night time, holiday, and/or weekend work to respond to emergencies. The scope of the position requires exposure to and use of chemicals, solvents, cleaners, and lubricants common to mechanical work that may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed. Must be able to read the English language sufficiently to understand written work orders and instructions as well as directions for the proper mixture, use, and disposal/storage of cleaners, solvents, paints, and similar products used in mechanical services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Performs skilled locksmith work by installing, maintaining, adjusting, and repairing different types of building locks including cylindrical, unit, mortis and rim, and reload cylinders, panic hardware, door closers, digital entry systems, automatic doors and controls, power supplies, motion detectors, transmitters, electric strikes, cutting new or replacement keys for authorized personnel as requested on Key Request forms, repairing locks on desks, file cabinets, display cases, and similar containers, picking locks for which keys have been lost, and making emergency repairs of locks as required under emergency conditions.

2. Assists in maintaining Master Key Systems for University security by keeping accurate records of hardware changes and new lock installations in each building, maintaining necessary lists, card files, receipts, and other records to account for combination locking devices, and repairing, maintaining and reloading cylinders for locks in the master key system.

3. Provides assistance during renovation of existing or construction of new facilities by determining the requirements for locking devices and systems from blueprints, schematics or sketches, making recommendations for such systems based upon knowledge of available products, and installing or monitoring the installation of locking devices or systems on renovated or newly constructed facilities.

4. Determines established applicable hardware specifications for locks and locking devices by interpreting hardware schedules, blueprints, plans, sketches, work orders, etc.

5. Maintains security of lock key shop, maintains security of key codes and all mechanical security systems, and surveys building locks and locking systems to assure adequate building security.

6. Ensures that an adequate and appropriate stock of locksmith supplies and equipment is available for use by maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment including key blanks, lock parts, levers and springs, knobs and cylinders, preparing requisitions for replacements items as necessary, and storing the supplies and equipment in a secure storage facility.

7. Where applicable, may provide assistance to residents by responding to maintenance issues in student rooms, common areas, and private and common bathrooms.

8. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

9. Contributes to the overall success of the Mechanical Maintenance Department and Residence Life and Services by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.

SUPERVISION

The Access Control Specialist is supervised by the Mechanical Maintenance Foreman and generally exercises no supervision on others.
