The Senior Network Analyst is part of a team which is responsible for the University campus network infrastructures. The Senior Network Analyst performs Network Analyst job responsibilities including designing, implementing, and maintaining the networks by managing network IP addresses, communicating network information and requirements to connect hosts onto the network, and installing, upgrading, and maintaining network routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, wireless controllers, other network devices and servers; working with vendors to research emerging technologies and diagnose and resolve network problems; automating network tasks; utilizing multiple tools to monitor the network to ensure optimum performance and to assist in troubleshooting issues; maintaining Internet links, working with other Information Security units, faculty, staff, and students in the integration, maintenance, and problem resolution of network services; maintaining documentation and database information of network services; and working with Procurement Services in the preparation and evaluation of bid specifications for network hardware and software, as directed by the Director of Networking.
The Senior Network Analyst must have a deeper understanding of most of the areas covered by the Networking Department. This position will fill in for any of the routine tasks that are normally handled by the Network Analysts and other Senior Network Analysts. The Senior Network Analyst can make network design decisions and represent the Networking Department when the Director of Networking is not available.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A bachelor’s degree is required; a bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in a computer-related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of years of experience and education may be considered for substitution of educational requirements.
Experience: Three years of experience in network analysis and design of a major multi-vendor network environment is required. Work experience in a higher education environment is preferred.
Skills: The ability to effectively manage multiple, complex network-based projects concurrently is required. Effective interpersonal, customer service, organizational, and team-building skills are required. The ability to give and follow technical instructions, both verbal and written, is required. Effective verbal and written communication skills are required. The ability to maintain confidentiality regarding information processed, stored, or accessed by the networks is required. A thorough understanding of network protocols including TCP/IP and networking equipment including routers, switches, and firewalls is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required. A familiarity backbone and Wide Area Networking (WAN) components, wiring infrastructures, VPNs, Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking protocols, multicast, firewalls, wireless infrastructure, DHCP, DNS, IP address management and network monitoring software is preferred.
Effort: Requires working at computer workstations for extended periods of time and requires regularly lifting and carrying objects weighing up to twenty-five pounds and occasionally up to fifty pounds. Requires sufficient mobility to replace networking equipment and connect cables in ceilings and wiring centers which may require climbing ladders and working in confined spaces.
Other: The 24-hour scope of the department requires this position to be available evenings, nights, and weekends to respond to calls regarding questions or problems with the University’s networks; occasional travel to remote sites within our 24-county area may be required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assures the University's networking requirements are met with the highest level of performance and reliability by assisting the Director of Networking in maintaining the hardware and software components of the University’s networks.2. Maintains and manages IP addresses, DHCP servers, Domain Name Services (DNS), Radius, and other servers and software systems on both physical and hypervisor server environments.
3. Maintains the integrity of the network by installing, upgrading, and maintaining network routers, switches, wireless, VPN, firewalls, and other devices at current operating system levels as provided by the manufacturer, working with vendors to diagnose and resolve network problems, operating and configuring protocol analyzers to diagnose problems, analyzing captured data using network protocols to determine problems, and using network monitoring software to detect network conditions requiring corrective action or performance tuning.
4. Assists with the integration, maintenance, and problem resolution of network services and wiring infrastructures by working with Networking and Telecommunications staff, user support entities, vendors, and end-users including University contractors and guests.
5. Ensures accurate records are kept of network components, maintenance activities, network connections, accounts, and inventory.
6. Programs network applications as needed such as web, network monitoring, bandwidth utilization, general data collection, reporting, and automated response to abnormal or undesirable network conditions.
7. Manages and trains student workers in the Networking Department to ensure that they can troubleshoot network-related issues and keep the network documentation up to date.
8. Represents the Networking Department when the Director of Networking is not available.
9. Works with Procurement Services to prepare and evaluate bid specifications for the purchase and maintenance of network hardware, software, and services.
10. Helps to ensure the availability of computer resources by assisting with disaster prevention and recovery efforts caused by events like power outages, hardware failures, etc.
11. Maintains confidentiality regarding information processed, stored, or accessed by the networks.
12. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
13. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the Director of Networking.
14. Contributes to the overall success of Information Services by performing all other essential duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION
The Senior Network Analyst is supervised by the Director of Networking and may involve regular but limited supervision and training of small numbers of student or part-time workers where the nature of supervision is largely confined to scheduling work or assigning tasks.
