GENERAL FUNCTION
The Distance Learning Engineer (DLE) Supervisor provides direction and oversight for the Access and Outreach distance learning delivery system and ensures the operating system is fully functioning for ITV class instruction and conferences. The DLE Supervisor is responsible for system planning including equipment upgrades, deployment of effective and efficient operating systems, comparative purchasing analysis, oversight of maintenance contracts, and recommendations for process improvements. Systems currently include ITV classrooms (two-way, compressed video for interactive classrooms) in multiple locations throughout southwest Missouri and media-based production equipment. The DLE Supervisor supervises the DLE’s, communicates regularly with the Office of Interactive Video and Off-Campus Programs and the off-site coordinators, classroom instructional technology specialists, and faculty. The DLE Supervisor ensures that faculty and staff are trained and supported prior to the beginning of each semester and throughout the semester and maintains appropriate staffing coverage to ensure prompt, comprehensive, and component response to issues.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor’s degree with a focus or coursework in a technical field is required.
Experience: At least three years of supervisory experience and a background in servicing, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting audio/video equipment and audio/video distribution systems is required. Experience with systems engineering and design, computer networks, computer-based management of technical systems, and technical troubleshooting is required.
Skills: Skill in the use of electronic test equipment and hand tools, as well as basic mechanical and electrical abilities are required. The ability to operate equipment in the aforementioned delivery systems is required. Computer competency is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Supervisory skills are required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
Effort: The ability to lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to sixty pounds and to climb ladders to a height of twenty feet is required.
Other: The position involves regularly working a later shift which extends into the evening hours in order to provide technical support when classes occur; some weekend work will be required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assists Access and Outreach to achieve its distance learning objectives by maintaining the operational conditions of various media delivery systems, including ITV media-based production equipment (video codecs, audio conferencing equipment, and other telecommunications equipment such as MCUs and codecs, monitors, document cameras, wired and wireless microphones, audio and video mixers, computer/server control systems, and associated equipment).
2. Ensures the completeness of repairs made on media equipment by diagnosing failures, initiating appropriate corrective action, verifying proper operation and installation of repaired components, and evaluating, recommending, and administering the repair process with organizations outside the University.
3. Ensures that new equipment is ready for use by receiving, inventorying, testing, connecting, and installing new equipment.
4. Oversees and facilitates the use of distance learning systems by providing training to faculty and staff and assisting in the creation of print and web-based materials with text and graphics to supplement presentation.
5. Uses a systems engineering and design approach to operations, assigns DLEs to support and troubleshoot problems and resolve issues to maintain instructional delivery for all courses during the day, evenings, and weekends as necessary, and monitors problems for timely resolution.
6. Sets professional standards for DLEs including continuing professional development to demonstrate competency in the field and holds staff accountable for their actions.
7. Helps to assure the maximum utilization and support for distance learning by working cooperatively and collaboratively with other University departments, investigating and recommending new technologies, assisting in the design and purchase decisions of new equipment and systems to enhance, upgrade, and advance the University’s distance learning systems.
8. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
9. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required.
10. Contributes to the success of Access and Outreach by performing all other essential duties as directed.
SUPERVISION
The Distance Learning Engineer Supervisor is supervised by the Associate Provost for Access and Outreach, supervises Distance Learning Engineers and may supervise part time and student employees for media distribution systems.
