GENERAL FUNCTION

The Program Coordinator, Citizenship and Service-Learning (CASL) is responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of service-learning activities, including, but not limited to, advising prospective service-learners, organizing orientation and training sessions for service-learners, fostering partnerships among faculty, students, and community partners to facilitate service-learning, working with faculty to incorporate service-learning effectively into their teaching and research, disseminating information about service-learning opportunities based on community needs, overseeing the department’s signature service-learning projects, and solving problems related to the service-learning program.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree is required and a Master's degree is preferred.

Experience: At least two years of work experience in community relations, volunteer engagement or related areas is required. Previous successful experience in collaborating with businesses and/or not-for-profit agencies is required. Teaching experience in a higher education environment is preferred.

Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills are required; public speaking skills preferred. Excellent interpersonal skills are required; the ability to work effectively with faculty members across campus is required. Computer literacy is required. Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision. Organizational, management, and supervisory skills are required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required. Familiarity with college student life issues is preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assists the CASL Director with overall planning and implementation of service-learning and other programs and activities of the Center for Community Engagement.

2. Serves as a resource person for faculty members interested in integrating service-learning into their academic courses and programs.

3. Assists the CASL Director to ensure that the Citizenship and Service-Learning program achieves its stated goals by recruiting community partners who work cooperatively with faculty in placing students in a variety of direct and/or indirect service experiences as part of the course work in selected classes and recruiting students for program participation.

4. Facilitates the successful participation of students in the service-learning program by providing the necessary information and support services, including student orientation, advisement, and placement of service learning students.

5. Facilitates effective communication among community partners, faculty, and the service-learners to ensure successful CASL efforts.

6. Assists in planning and organizing CASL and Center for Community Engagement (CCE) events, including the Community Partner Thank You Breakfast, Volunteer Fair, and faculty development programs.

7. Coordinates communications and publicity efforts for CASL, assists with CASC and CCE budgets and purchases, and develops financial and statistical reports.

8. Manages the department’s signature service-learning programs, such as Math LegoLand, MSU Vision Screening Program, and Safe and Sanitary Homes Collaborative.

9. Contributes to the growth and effectiveness of the CASL department and Center for Community Engagement by researching new programs and projects as directed and serves on various committees as assigned.

10. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

11. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Director of Citizenship and Service Learning.

12. Contributes to the overall success of the Citizenship and Service Learning program by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed.

SUPERVISION

The Program Coordinator, Citizenship and Service Learning is supervised by the Director of Citizenship and Service Learning and supervises graduate assistants and student employees.
