GENERAL FUNCTION
The Distance Education and Laboratory Supervisor-CNAS assists in teaching distance education classes and teaching the laboratory sections of assigned classes. The Distance Education and Laboratory Supervisor-CNAS manages distance education courses by coordinating class activities and assuring technology is working correctly on both the teaching and receiving campus, proctoring exams, and collecting and returning assignments. The Distance Education and Laboratory Supervisor-CNAS sets up materials for laboratory exercises, prepares and orders materials for laboratory exercises, supervises undergraduate teaching assistants, and teaches laboratory sections of assigned classes in coordination with the instructor providing the lecture portion of the course.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience: Either a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering and one year of teaching experience or a Master of Science degree is required. With either the BS or MS degree, experience installing and maintaining computer hardware, software, and peripherals, such as printers, smart boards, multimedia projectors, scanners, document viewers, ITV equipment, etc. is required.
Skills: Effective verbal and written communication skills are required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Helps to provide an effective learning experience for students enrolled in cooperative engineering program courses by assisting with distance education classes and teaching laboratory classes.
2. Works with faculty and the program director to assure that students are provided with appropriate materials to facilitate learning by ordering, preparing, and setting up materials needed for laboratory exercises utilizing an understanding of safety regulations.
3. Promotes laboratory safety by providing sanitized safety goggles and other safety equipment as prescribed by Missouri statutes to students in all cooperative engineering laboratories.
4. Works the Director of Environmental Management (MSU) and the Director of Environmental Health and Safety (S&T) to ensure that all environmental and safety regulations are followed in laboratory exercises.
5. Helps to provide a coordinated learning experience for students by instructing and supervising undergraduate teaching assistants assigned to the course and coordinating with the course lecture instructor, whether that lecture instructor be in Rolla or in Springfield.
6. Helps to provide an effective learning experience for students enrolled in distance courses offered from either campus by assuring the distance education technology resources are working properly for both the students and faculty and coordinating class activities with faculty, staff, and students on both campuses.
7. Collects and returns assignments and proctors exams for distance courses offered by faculty from another campus.
8. Ensures that faculty and students can effectively utilize technology resources in labs and classrooms by installing, upgrading, maintaining, and resolving problems with computers, printers, smart boards, multimedia projectors, scanners, document viewers, ITV equipment, and equipment particular to the engineering program and enlisting the assistance of the CNAS Instructional Technology Support Specialist as needed for more difficult issues.
9. Provides information technology user support services to faculty and staff in the engineering program by installing new computer workstations and software, installing upgrades and patches, and resolving problems with information technology equipment and software.
10. May support the unit by assisting in the development of web pages.
11. Ensures that a quality program of support services is continuously offered by meeting regularly with the engineering program director and faculty and staff to review, assess, and suggest improvements regarding technical support.
12. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
13. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the assigned supervisor of the Dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences.
14. Contributes to the overall success of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences by performing all duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION
The Distance Education and Laboratory Supervisor is supervised by the program director of the cooperative engineering program and supervises undergraduate teaching assistants assigned to the course.
