GENERAL FUNCTION

The Assistant Director, Counseling Center assists the Director, Counseling Center with the daily functioning of clinical operations and supervision and provides administrative supervision and oversight for a subgroup of Mental Health Clinicians. The Assistant Director, Counseling Center counsels University students with psychological or educational concerns and provides outreach and consultation.  The Assistant Director, Counseling Center takes a lead role in oversight and planning of training within the Counseling Center.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A master's degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or a mental health discipline is required; a doctorate in psychology, counseling, or a mental health discipline is preferred.

Experience: At least five years of experience as a mental health clinician is required; clinical experience working in a college counseling center is required.  Experience supervising mental health clinicians is required.  Experience in Solution Focused Brief Therapy is preferred.  Experience in providing tele mental health services is preferred.

Skills: Leadership skills are required.  Management skills are required. Supervisory skills are required.  Crisis assessment and intervention skills are required. A demonstrated commitment to principles of inclusion, social justice, and advocacy is required. Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills are required. Dedication to collaboration and teamwork in a multidisciplinary setting is required. A commitment to the highest ethical, legal, and professional standards of practice is required. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. 

Licensure: Professional licensure in the mental health field in Missouri or current licensure in another state and eligibility to become fully licensed in Missouri within 6 months of the date of employment is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. In the absence of the Director,  provides  oversight  and  responsibility  for counseling  center  services.

2.  Facilitates the optimal functioning and well-being of University students by providing individual, couples, and group counseling.

3. Ensures that the concerns of clients are addressed in an appropriate manner through psychological assessment procedures and making referrals when indicated.

4. Promotes responsible care of Counseling Center clients by maintaining documentation of client contacts, consultations, and referrals in accordance with professional guidelines.

5. Ensures that the needs of students are addressed in emergency situations by providing crisis intervention services during office hours and after hours as needed.

6. Provides educational workshops by participating in proactive outreach programming.

7. Obtains additional relevant information and promotes self-understanding with clients by suggesting and interpreting psychological and vocational tests.

8. Facilitates the understanding of psychological issues and concerns of the University community by serving as a consultant for the University and the greater community.

9. Ensures that services are provided in an ethical and responsible manner by providing training and supervision for graduate students, support staff, student workers, and paraprofessionals.

10. Provides clinical supervision for staff seeking licensure.

11. Maintains and enhances the quality and relevance of services provided by the Center through on-going evaluation of all services.

12. Ensures optimal operations of the Counseling Center by conferring with the Director regarding administrative policies and procedures of the Center and the University.

13. Provides input and remains current on operations of the Counseling Center by attending staff meetings.

14. Remains knowledgeable about current trends in counseling, psychotherapy, and student development by participating in professional development through presentations, publications and memberships in professional organizations and obtaining Continuing Education Units (CEUs) as required by the state licensing and regulatory boards.

15. Contributes to overall functioning of the Counseling Center by completing all other tasks which are assigned by the Director, Counseling Center.

SUPERVISION

The Assistant Director, Counseling Center is supervised by the Director, Counseling Center and supervises interns, graduate students, and other staff as needed.

Factor 1: Professional Knowledge, Skill, and Technical Mastery

Factor 2: Supervisory Responsibility

Level 3.0 - 270 Points: Supervision of a limited number of (a) operative, administrative support, or paraprofessional employees who do not exercise a full range of supervisory responsibilities over other full-time employees, (b) a very small number of professional employees, or an equivalent combination of (a) and (b). The incumbent performs a full range of supervisory responsibilities including performance reviews of subordinates. The incumbent is generally responsible for training, planning, and directing the work of permanent employees, and provides major input into hiring decisions. Supervisory responsibilities consume moderate amounts of work time and may include general work planning tasks.

Factor 3: Interactions with Others

Level 4.0 - 500 Points: Interactions with others are somewhat unstructured. The purpose may be to influence or motivate others, to obtain information, or to control situations and resolve problems. Interactions may be with individuals or groups of co-workers, students, or the general public, may be moderately unstructured, and may involve persons who hold differing goals and objectives. Individuals at this level often act as a liaison between groups with a focus on solving particular unstructured problems. Interactions at this level require considerable interpersonal skill and the ability to resolve conflict.

Factor 4: Job Controls and Guidelines

Level 3.0 - 500 Points: The employee operates under general supervision expressed in terms of program goals and objectives, priorities, and deadlines. Administrative supervision is given through statements of overall program or project objectives and available resources. Administrative guidelines are relatively comprehensive and the employee need only to fill in gaps in interpretation and adapt established methods to perform recurring activities. In unforeseen situations, the employee must interpret inadequate or incomplete guidelines, develop plans, and initiate new methods to complete assignments based on those interpretations. Assignments are normally related in function, but the work requires many different processes and methods applied to an established administrative or professional field. Problems are typically the result of unusual circumstances, variations in approach, or incomplete or conflicting data. The employee must interpret and refine methods to complete assignments. Characteristic jobs at this level may involve directing single-purpose programs or performing complex, but precedented, technical or professional work.

Factor 5: Managerial Responsibility

Level 3.0 - 850 Points: Work involves providing significant support services to others both within and outside of the department that substantially influences decision-making processes. Work activities are complex and others rely on the accuracy and reliability of the information, analysis, or advice to make decisions. Work activities have a direct, but shared, impact on further processes or services, affect the overall efficiency and image of the department, and may have material impact on costs or service quality within the cost center. Incumbents may be responsible for identifying areas of need and for developing proposals that request funding to fulfill those needs.
