GENERAL FUNCTION

 

The Assistant Director, Student Engagement - Fraternity and Sorority Life supervises and coordinates the activities of fraternity and sorority chapters at the University.  The Assistant Director, Student Engagement - Fraternity and Sorority Life serves as the advisor to various fraternity and sorority life chapters, councils, and committees. The Assistant Director, Student Engagement - Fraternity and Sorority Life supervises the Coordinator of Co-Curricular Involvement, which manages the overall support for student organizations, including registration, advisor training, and organizational development programs.

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education: A Bachelor's degree is required.  A Master's degree in Educational Administration, College Student Personnel, or other related field is preferred.

 

Experience: At least one year of experience with social Greek letter organizations in a leadership capacity is required; direct advisory experience is preferred. Experience supervising full-time staff is preferred.

 

Skills:  Excellent organizational abilities, verbal and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills are required. Demonstrated problem-solving ability is required. Computer literacy is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

 

Other: The scope of the position frequently requires attendance at evening and/or weekend activities, meetings, seminars, and workshops.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1. Provides overall advisement, training, and support of the recognized fraternities and sororities on campus.

 

2. Assists in the development of a responsible fraternity and sorority community through advising governing councils and committees.

 

3. Supervises a professional staff member(s), graduate assistants(s), and student worker(s).

 

4. Assists in establishing and/or maintaining the position of the fraternity and sorority community within the collegial environment by ensuring their understanding of and compliance with all University policies, the Student Code of Rights and Responsibilities, the Fraternity and Sorority Life Governance Statement, as well as municipal, state, and federal laws.

 

5. Assists the Office of Student Conduct in upholding the Fraternity and Sorority Governance Statement and administering the fraternity and sorority conduct process when necessary. 

 

6. Provides positive guidance and mentoring for student members of the fraternity and sorority community by developing a collaborative relationship with and supporting faculty and staff advisors, alumni advisors, volunteers, and general headquarters staff.

 

7. Provides regular feedback to fraternity and sorority chapters by administering the annual feedback meetings and fraternity and sorority life awards processes.

 

8. Coordinates educational programming related to leadership, risk management, etc., including the annual fraternity and sorority life leadership retreat.

 

9. Promotes a positive image of the University by assisting the Office of Student Engagement in the planning, development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of major University-wide special events and leadership programs and assists with other staff-initiated programs.

 

10. Manages financial resources, within budget limits, in accordance with University guidelines under the guidance and supervision of the Associate Director, Student Engagement by planning, developing, and monitoring the departmental budget.

 

11. As a member of the Office of Student Engagement serves as a general advisor to all campus student organizations.

 

12. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

 

13. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Associate Director of Student Engagement.

 

14. Supports the overall operation of the Plaster Student Union and contributes to the department’s success by performing all other duties as assigned.

The Assistant Director, Student Engagement - Fraternity and Sorority Life is supervised by the Associate Director, Student Engagement and supervises a professional staff member, graduate assistants, and a student employee.

Factor 1: Professional Knowledge, Skill, and Technical Mastery

Level 2.0 - 900 Points: Entry-level professional knowledge of the principles, concepts, practices, and methods of non-technical administrative and managerial functions. This level of knowledge permits the employee to schedule and carry out the steps of a limited operation or project to complete stages of a multi-phase project. Knowledge at this level is typically acquired through a combination of formal education and/or training and experience that includes a requirement for a college degree in an unspecified field or a specific background in a non-technical area. Knowledge requirements may also include a limited amount of related work experience.

Factor 2: Supervisory Responsibility

Level 3.0 - 270 Points: Supervision of a limited number of (a) operative, administrative support, or paraprofessional employees who do not exercise a full range of supervisory responsibilities over other full-time employees, (b) a very small number of professional employees, or an equivalent combination of (a) and (b). The incumbent performs a full range of supervisory responsibilities including performance reviews of subordinates. The incumbent is generally responsible for training, planning, and directing the work of permanent employees, and provides major input into hiring decisions. Supervisory responsibilities consume moderate amounts of work time and may include general work planning tasks.

Factor 3: Interactions with Others

Level 4.0 - 500 Points: Interactions with others are somewhat unstructured. The purpose may be to influence or motivate others, to obtain information, or to control situations and resolve problems. Interactions may be with individuals or groups of co-workers, students, or the general public, may be moderately unstructured, and may involve persons who hold differing goals and objectives. Individuals at this level often act as a liaison between groups with a focus on solving particular unstructured problems. Interactions at this level require considerable interpersonal skill and the ability to resolve conflict.

Factor 4: Job Controls and Guidelines

Level 2.0 - 250 Points: The employee carries out a group of procedures using the general methods and desired results indicated by the supervisor. Typically, standard operating procedures, handbooks, and/or reference manuals exist for most procedures, but the employee must select from the most appropriate of several guidelines and make minor adjustments to methods. Unforeseen situations are normally referred to others for resolution. Assignments are related in function and objective, but processes, procedures, or software varies from one assignment to another. Based on the assignment, the employee uses diverse, but conventional, methods, techniques, or approaches. Employees in jobs at this level may perform work that is moderately complex, but normally performed within a fairly narrow and specific functional area.

Factor 5: Managerial Responsibility

Level 3.0 - 850 Points: Work involves providing significant support services to others both within and outside of the department that substantially influences decision-making processes. Work activities are complex and others rely on the accuracy and reliability of the information, analysis, or advice to make decisions. Work activities have a direct, but shared, impact on further processes or services, affect the overall efficiency and image of the department, and may have material impact on costs or service quality within the cost center. Incumbents may be responsible for identifying areas of need and for developing proposals that request funding to fulfill those needs.
