GENERAL FUNCTION
The Coordinator, Student Success Initiatives directs student success initiatives in the Academic Advisement and Transfer Center, including the Jump START (Summer Transition and Readiness Training) program, a summer bridge program for students who would not otherwise be admissible to Missouri State University. The Coordinator, Student Success Initiatives advises students who are admitted through the individual review/exceptions process throughout the year. The Coordinator, Student Success Initiatives carries an advising load of individual review and exploratory majors, assisting assigned students in the development of academic plans appropriate for their stated educational goals, guiding exploratory students in the selection of academic majors, and directing students to resources within the University that provide assistance in making career/academic major program choices, as appropriate.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Master's degree is required.
Experience: At least three years of academic advising or counseling experience is required, where knowledge of federal, state, and higher education policies and procedures has been gained. Experience with and interest in working with at risk and/or first year student populations are required. Teaching experience is preferred. Experience with program design, planning, and assessment is preferred.
Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills (particularly in working with a diverse student population), and organizational and management skills are required. The ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and administrators from across campus is required. A working knowledge of various computer and database applications is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
Other: The scope of the position occasionally requires work in the evenings and on weekends.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provides an essential student service of academic advisement by being knowledgeable of academic policies and procedures unique to Missouri State University that facilitate the advising process, assists assigned students in the development of academic plans appropriate for their educational goals, guides students in decision-making and learning how to accept responsibility for their decisions, assists students seeking academic information, assists exploratory majors, Jump START, and individual review students in choosing academic programs, and directs students to resources within the University that provide assistance in making career and academic program choices.
2. Ensures the effectiveness of the advising process by maintaining electronic advising notes for all advisees and using information in the Banner system to advise students appropriately.
3. Works cooperatively with Admissions, New Student and Family Programs, and the Office of the Registrar in getting Jump START students admitted, oriented, and registered, works with Residence Life, Housing and Dining Services to provide a positive on-campus living experience, works with offices across campus to plan services and events to enhance the educational experience of Jump START students, and serves on the exceptions committee through the Office of Admissions.
4. Monitors the success of individual review and Jump START students, upholds standards of the program in determining which students successfully complete the program, assesses the success of the program, and makes plans for improvement as needed.
5. Chairs the Jump START advisory council with the assistance of the Associate Director, Center for Academic Success and Transition and works with academic department heads to ensure the availability of appropriate summer courses for Jump START students.
6. Assists with the success of academic advising across campus by planning and presenting at selected advisor training and development programs.
7. Assists students in developing strong academic skills by teaching or participating in appropriate courses, such as GEP 101 and IDS 118.
8. Works cooperatively with the Director, academic advisement and Transfer Center to make budgetary decisions for the Jump START program.
9. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
10. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading,
developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development
courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the supervisor.
11. Contributes to the overall success of the Academic Advisement and Transfer Center by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
SUPERVISION
The Coordinator of Student Success Initiatives is supervised by the Director of the Academic Advisement and Transfer Center and generally exercises no supervision of others.
