GENERAL FUNCTION

The Academic Coordinator, Upward Bound primarily focuses on the recruitment and retention of high school students for the Upward Bound program. Operating within each of the 3 target schools on a weekly basis, the Academic Coordinator maintains close contact with the target schools’ administration, liaisons, counselors, and students and oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Upward Bound curriculum including weekly meetings, Saturday Sessions, and individual student advising. The Academic Coordinator performs data collection and analysis of student participation and academics as well as stipend and tutoring management. This position also communicates with parents and families of participants frequently. The Academic Coordinator oversees the operation of the summer program and supervises summer program support staff and student employees.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A bachelor’s degree in education, social work, psychology or a closely related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred.

Experience: At least two years of experience in program planning, social work, and/or program management is required. At least one year of direct work experience with low income, first generation high school students is required. At least one year of teaching or counseling experience at the secondary or postsecondary level is preferred.

Skills: Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required. A demonstrated ability to work well with students, teachers, community partners, and other educational personnel is required. A commitment to the target population and the principles of equal opportunity is required. 

Other: A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is required. The Academic Coordinator’s site location for work varies daily from the 3 target schools and MSU Main Campus. This is a set schedule on a weekly basis. This position requires working evenings and weekends occasionally. . Occasional out-of-town travel, including overnight stays, is required. A background similar to Upward Bound participants is preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Leads efforts to recruit high school students to the Upward Bound program and serves as primary liaison in communication with target schools.

2. Works with the Assistant Director/Director, TRIO – Upward Bound on planning and serves as the primary implementer of curriculum-based and activity-based programming including but not limited to: advising, weekly meetings, Saturday Sessions, cultural and social events, and college visits.

3. Maintains regular contact and provides referral services to students through advising and weekly meetings.

4. Oversees the Individual Educational Plan process.

5. Updates and maintains the student database and files with daily and weekly notes.

6. Assists the Director, TRIO – Upward Bound with developing the summer program and oversees daily summer program operations.

7. Assists in the supervision of graduate assistant, summer program support staff and student employees.

8. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the supervisor.

9. Supports the overall success of TRIO by performing all duties as assigned.

The Academic Coordinator, Upward Bound – TRIO does not have any direct reports or supervise.

Factor 2: Supervisory Responsibility

Level 1.0 - 50 Points: Typically, little, if any, supervision of others is required. The job may require irregular but occasional responsibility to direct the work of student workers and/or temporary or part-time workers. The nature of supervision is largely confined to assigning tasks to others and does not include a full range of supervisory responsibilities. The amount of time spent on directing the work of others is normally a small portion of total work time.

Factor 3: Interactions with Others

Level 3.0 - 250 Points: The purpose of interactions is to advise or counsel others to solve recurring and structured problems, and/or to plan or coordinate work efforts with other employees who are working toward common goals in situations where relationships are generally cooperative. Interactions are moderately structured and routine and may involve employees in different functions, students, and/or the general public. These types of interactions require normal interpersonal skills.

Factor 4: Job Controls and Guidelines

Level 2.0 - 250 Points: The employee carries out a group of procedures using the general methods and desired results indicated by the supervisor. Typically, standard operating procedures, handbooks, and/or reference manuals exist for most procedures, but the employee must select from the most appropriate of several guidelines and make minor adjustments to methods. Unforeseen situations are normally referred to others for resolution. Assignments are related in function and objective, but processes, procedures, or software varies from one assignment to another. Based on the assignment, the employee uses diverse, but conventional, methods, techniques, or approaches. Employees in jobs at this level may perform work that is moderately complex, but normally performed within a fairly narrow and specific functional area.

Factor 5: Managerial Responsibility

Level 2.0 - 400 Points: Work involves services including collecting, processing, and disseminating information and providing advice to others. Work activities may be complex and likely affect the accuracy, reliability, or acceptability of further processes or services to the extent that others rely on the advice given in order to make decisions. Work activities typically affect the efficiency of the department but have relatively minor effects on operations within the cost center. Individuals in jobs at this level are often responsible for actively documenting, monitoring, and controlling expenditures. Incumbents may recommend minor expenditures, but have no substantive authority over budgets.
