GENERAL FUNCTION

The Vice President for Student Affairs is the chief student-personnel officer of the University and advises the President on all matters pertaining to non-academic student life. The Vice President serves as the senior executive officer responsible for providing leadership and general management of units in the division:

Enrollment Management: Admissions, coordination of commencements, Records, Registration, Scholarships and Financial Aid, Veterans Affairs, Student Employment, the creation of recruitment material and publications, including the university catalog and class schedules

Student Life Activities: Plaster Student Union, Conference Services, Office of Student Engagement, Co-curricular involvement, Leadership Development, Student Organizations, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Intramural and Recreational Sports, Foster Family Recreation Center, Residence Life, Housing and Dining Services, coordination of New Student Convocation

Dean of Students Office: Student Conduct, coordination of the Behavioral Intervention Team, Parking Appeals, Student Government Association

Student Academic Support Services: Career Counseling, Internal and External Internship Coordination, Career Fairs, Student and alumni Job Placement, Counseling and Testing, Emergency Psychological Services

University Bookstore: Bookstore, BearWear shop and catalogue, JQH Arena Team Store, convenience stores

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Master's degree is required.

Experience: Eight years of progressively responsible administrative experience in higher education, preferably in student affairs/student development, is required.

Skills: Requires excellent leadership ability. The ability to project a strong positive image of the University through public speaking, personal interaction with legislators, parents, faculty, staff, students, and others is required. Experience with the development, modification, and/or management of automated data systems is required. The ability to satisfactorily solve problems commonly found within the higher education environment is required. Proficiency in organizing and managing complex functions and the ability to gain the trust and confidence of students is required. A demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse environment is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Ensures divisional compliance with the institutional mission by reviewing and approving unit plans, goals and objectives, and service activities.

2. Develops and maintains a properly coordinated delivery of essential student services by organizing the various units and sub-units in a logical, non-duplicative, and effective manner to best meet the work requirements of the division and the needs of the student body.

3. Assures the prompt and effective delivery of student services by monitoring workloads throughout the division and prioritizing staffing needs accordingly.

4. Enables division employees to perform their assigned tasks by coordinating the annual budget and retaining executive authority over all budgets within the Division of Student Affairs.

5. Encourages high morale and quality student service through a leadership style which causes employees to strive for the achievement of annually established goals and objectives.

6. Manages the achievement of division goals by developing effective controls to guide work effort toward expected outcomes.

7. Promotes positive student relations by maintaining effective lines of communication with student leaders and serving as a strong advocate for the non-academic, extra-curricular, and co-curricular needs of students.

8. Supports positive relations for the University by communicating and interacting with city, state, and other officials in matters related to Student Affairs.

9. Ensures that miscellaneous assignments related to Student Affairs are completed in the best interests of the University by accepting and accomplishing tasks which are delegated by the President.

10. Supports the overall success of Student Affairs by participating in fundraising activities for the division and serving on university committees as appropriate.

11. Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

12. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required.

13. Supports and assists the President by providing regular reports, developing resolutions for approval of the President and action by the Board of Governors, and completing other tasks and duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

The Vice President for Student Affairs supervises the five major units within the Division of Student Affairs and is supervised by the President of the University.
