1. Roll Call – Ms. Beverly Miller, Committee Chair, called the Programs and Planning
Committee meeting to order at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2018, on the Missouri
State University campus. She welcomed William Miller, new student governor, to the
Board.
2. Approval of Minutes – Ms. Miller mentioned that the first item of business was the approval of the minutes from the February 23, 2018, meeting. Ms. Virginia Fry so moved, receiving a second from Mr. Craig Frazier.
Motion passed unanimously.
3. Bear Power – Dr. Frank Einhellig, Provost, gave an overview of how Bear POWER
started. He then introduced Dr. David Hough, Dean of the College of Education. Dr.
Hough discussed the University and community involvement with the program. He then
introduced Dr. Chris Craig, Deputy Provost, and Ms. Rachel Heinz, College of Education.
Ms. Heinz highlighted the programs positive impact. She shared that the admission
process has already started with the first students set to start in January 2019.
In addition, Dr. Rebecca Woodard, Professor in Kinesiology, discussed a partnership
with ARC of the Ozarks, who will provide training for staff. Mr. Zachary Burt, Instructor
in Kinesiology, and Mr. Joshua Devine, Graduate Student, highlighted the social aspect
and talked about the “Bear Blazers”, a student organization that will provide support
to the Bear POWER students. Ms. Brittany Knebel, Graduate Student, then discussed
the summer retreat, a no cost event sponsored by the Community Foundation of the Ozarks,
for Bear POWER students and their parents. Program updates will be provided at future
meetings.
4. Adjournment – Ms. Miller adjourned the Programs and Planning Committee meeting
at 11:46 a.m. on the motion of Mr. Gabriel Gore, the second of Ms. Amelia Counts,
and the unanimous approval of the committee.
