BCSSE Advising Reports
Overview
The Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) Advising Status Report “identifies the activities and experiences the student expects from the upcoming academic year.” BCSSE institutions receive BCSSE Advising Reports for entering first-year and transfer students who take the survey in the summer during SOAR orientation. Each report is saved as a unique student-specific report and uploaded to a student's advising notes page.
BCSSE Advising Reports may be used by advisors to gain valuable insights and information about incoming students. These insights can help identify barriers to retention and areas of concern regarding student success at Missouri State for individual students. The reports compare a student's response with responses from students at similar institutions and indicate if students are above, on par with, or below their peers for specific items from the survey.
Understanding the Advising Report
The BCSSE Advising Status Report identifies activities and experiences a student expects from their upcoming academic year. The Advising Status report consists of several sections, listed below. See Using BCSSE Advising Reports for further details.
- Legend
- Indicates how a student compares to other students at similar institutions who completed BCSSE.
- “Above peers” indicates higher than average for this item (green shading). “On par
with peers” indicates about average (yellow shading), while “Below peers” indicates
below average (red shading).
- NOTE: Expected Academic Difficulty has a reverse scale. See Academic Integration below for more information.
- Commitment to the Institution
- What is the student's commitment to Missouri State University?
- High School Experiences
- This section provides important prior academic context for entering students.
- Note how their engagement with Learning Strategies and Quantitative Reasoning compares to their peers.
- Academic Integration
- This section provides an excellent opportunity to help students set realistic academic
goals or to discuss how to find and utilize campus resources that will contribute
to a successful academic year.
- NOTE: The first three items in the Academic Integration section have a reversed scale. Red shading indicates the student is expecting greater difficulty than their peers, while green shading indicates the student is expecting less difficulty than their peers.
- This section provides an excellent opportunity to help students set realistic academic
goals or to discuss how to find and utilize campus resources that will contribute
to a successful academic year.
- Social Integration
- This section helps the advisor to consider the student’s expectations and importance to be socially involved. Particularly important is identifying students who may become socially isolated due to their expected difficulty making new friends, along with very few or no friends also attending the institution.
- Finances
-
These items provide an advisor important information about a student's financial outlook, as well their expected work hours.

Using the Data
Reviewing the BCSSE Advising Report prior to meeting with advisees can help focus advising discussions on ways to enhance a student's undergraduate experience while improving their success and retention at Missouri State Univeristy. These reports allow advisors to identify a student's strengths, potential challenges, and formulate and implement plans unique to a student to help them acheive more confidence and success.
See Using BCSSE for Strengths-Based Advising for additional information on strengths-based advising.
